Coaching Requirements

CPR/AED and First Aid Certification

Coaches must obtain certification in CPR/AED and First Aid before they can attend or hold a practice/game with students. See below for a list of approved courses. Please note that CPR/AED must be re-certified once a year even if the card is valid for two years. Coaches are responsible for maintaining/updating their certifications as required.

Concussion Training

Coaches must be up-to-date on current concussion awareness training, which must be completed every two years and is available for free through CDC Heads Up. Coaches are responsible for maintaining/updating their certifications as required.

Fingerprinting

Successful completion of fingerprinting, the cost of which is to be incurred by the individual. There are exceptions for those who already have fingerprints on file with the State and those who are grandfathered in.

Coaching Courses

Coaches have one (1) year to begin their required Coaching Courses and must complete the courses within five (5) years of beginning service.

For NYS Certified Teachers:

  • A series of three (3) coaching courses (see below)
  • Copies of certificates of completion of the three (3) coaching courses given to Athletic Director for personnel file
  • Physical Education teachers are exempt due to their area of certification

For non-NYS Certified Teachers:

Deadlines for applications are:

  • Fall and Winter Sports due April 15th
  • Spring Sports due November 1st

All persons applying for a coaching vacancy must fill out an application and return it to Shawn Briscoe, Athletic Director, with ALL necessary certifications attached:

Prospective coaches must provide a photocopy of each certification and attach it to the application. Applications will be placed on file in the Human Resources Office.

All completed applications will be reviewed and recommendations made by the Athletic Director and building Principal will be forwarded to the Superintendent. HCSD is an equal opportunity employer, however please note that per contract, qualified members of the HCSD teaching unit will be given preference in the recommendation and hiring process.

Successful candidates will be notified by the Athletic Department and the Human Resources Office. Candidates who are not selected will receive notification from the Athletic Department.

Courses Accepted as Meeting the First Aid and CPR/AED Requirements

As of February 2020, these courses are accepted as meeting the First Aid and CPR/AED requirements for coaches. Some courses meet both certification requirements, such as the American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies.

Please note that completely online courses are not acceptable. Courses must include some aspect of hands-on learning.

NYSED does not require the following to have separate certification in First Aid/CPR to coach:

  • Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, LPN, and/or Nurse Aide
  • Physician and/or Physician Assistant
  • Licensed Physical Therapist
  • Certified Emergency Medical Technician
  • Certified National Athletic Trainer
  • Fire and Police officers (full time officers)
