General Requirements
The first 2 requirements must be met before an individual is allowed to attend or hold a practice/game with students:
- Current CPR/AED certification (must re-certify once a year, even if the card is valid for two years). See attached list of approved courses.
- Current 1st Aid Certification (American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies course or New York State First Aid for Coaches) See attached list of approved courses.
- Successful completion of fingerprinting by the school district. This cost is incurred by the individual. Exception would be those already on file with the state and those that are grandfathered in.
- For NYS Certified Teachers:
- A series of 3 coaching courses that must be completed within 5 years of beginning service.
- Copies of certificates of completion of the 3 coaching courses given to Athletic Director for personnel file.
- For non-NYS Certified Teachers:
- Must apply for a temporary coaching certificate from the State Education Department. Click here to download the temporary coaching certificate application (PDF)
- Completion of a series of 3 coaching courses that must be completed within 5 years of beginning service.
- Copies of certificates of completion of the 3 coaching courses given to Athletic Director for personnel file.
- Must apply for a professional coaching certification from the State Education Department upon completion of the required coaching courses. The certification is renewable. Click here to download the professional coaching certification application (PDF)
- Completion of NYS Child Abuse and SAVE (violence prevention programs) training.
Application Process for Coaching in the Hudson City School District
- All persons applying for a coaching vacancy must fill out an application and return to the Athletic Director with ALL necessary certifications attached.
- Deadlines for applications are:
- Fall and Winter Sports due April 15th
- Spring Sports due December 1st
- All qualified applications will be reviewed and recommendations made by the Athletic Director and building Principal will be forwarded to the Superintendent. *Please note that per contract, qualified members of the HCSD teaching unit will be given preference in the recommendation and hiring process.
- Successful candidates will be notified by the Athletic department and the Human Resource office.
- Those candidates not chosen will receive notification from the Athletic department.
Courses Accepted as Meeting the Coaches First Aid and CPR Requirements
As of February 2019, these courses are accepted as meeting the coaches First Aid and CPR requirements. Please note that completely online courses are not acceptable. Courses must include some aspect of hands-on learning.
NYSED does not require the following to have separate certification in First Aid/CPR to coach:
- Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, LPN, and/or Nurse Aide
- Physician and/or Physician Assistant
- Licensed Physical Therapist
- Certified Emergency Medical Technician
- Certified National Athletic Trainer
- Fire and Police officers (full time officers)
