Dear Hudson Junior High School Families,

In recent years, the New York State Department of Education has been shifting from paper based testing to computer based testing for all 3-8 Testing.  As such, we would like to share some important information regarding the upcoming New York State Grades 3-8 assessments.  These assessments measure scholars’ progress in the mastery of state learning standards. The results of these assessments:

  • Provide families with information about their scholar’s academic achievement
  • Assist schools and the district in evaluating our instructional program
  • Help Schools to identify scholars who could benefit from additional instructional support
  • Measure school and district performance as part of the Every Student Succeeds Act

Here are the major changes to the science assessment:

  • The Science Assessment is no longer being offered as a paper-based assessment. It is only  being offered as computer-based testing (CBT).   Only 8th graders will take the Science assessment.
  • There is no longer a performance (hands-on) component to the test.
  • The exam will be a combination of multiple-choice and short and extended response questions.

Please be advised that students will be taking the New York State Assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics after Spring Break. The testing window for each assessment is as follows:

  • English Language Arts –  Both computer based and paper based (April 11th & 12th)
  • Mathematics – May 7th & 8th
  • Science (8th grade students only) April 26th
  • NYSESLAT Exams for English Language Learners (April 12th-May 23rd)

Each session will begin promptly after the morning announcements. Please be sure your child arrives at school on time. Bluehawk Academy students will take their assessments in the Junior High School with the rest of the students.   The English Language Arts and Mathematics Tests are untimed.

We appreciate your partnership in this endeavor.   We thank you for your understanding in this matter and wish everyone a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely Yours,

Rhode Cooper           Kenneth Behr
