Water Testing (2016)

The following information outlines water testing and results that were completed in 2007 and in 2016:

John L. Edwards Primary School

Faucets used for the purpose of water consumption (e.g., drinking fountains, kitchen faucets) were initially tested at JLE in 2007. Samples were tested for lead and copper and only four locations required remediation. One classroom fountain and three classroom sinks were replaced. After replacement, water samples were re-tested and all locations came back below 15 parts per billion (ppb), which is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) guideline for lead levels in drinking water.

The entire building was re-tested on September 26, 2016 to the broader New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) standards. These broader standards include testing water from faucets used for purposes other than water consumption (e.g., hoses, bathroom sinks). As part of Governor Cuomo’s legislation, the district will notify families of the results within 10 business days of receiving the reports.

M.C. Smith Intermediate School

In April 2016, primary water drinking locations at MCSIS were tested for lead and copper. All of the water samples except one came back below the EPA guideline, therefore only a single location required remediation. One classroom sink had lead levels above 15 ppb and was, therefore, turned off immediately. The sink was located in the Family and Consumer Science classroom and, due to lack of use, has not returned to service.

Additional water sampling was done on September 28, 2016 to the broader NYSDOH standards, which include faucets used for purposes other than water consumption (e.g., science labs, hoses). The District has not yet received the final reports from these samples. Parents/guardians will be notified of the results within 10 business days of receiving the reports.

Hudson Junior/Senior High School

Water samples were taken at Hudson Jr./Sr. High School and sent to be tested for lead and copper in June 2016. The results indicated no elevated readings, therefore no remediation was required.

Additional testing has been scheduled for October 20, 2016 to the broader NYSDOH standards, which include faucets used for purposes other than water consumption (e.g., science labs, hoses). Once sampling is complete and the reports have been received, parents/guardians will be notified of the results within 10 business days.
