Emergency Management

Districts are required to develop a District-wide School Safety Plan designed to prevent or minimize the effects of serious violent incidents and emergencies and to facilitate the coordination of the District with local and county resources in the event of such incidents or emergencies.

The District-wide School Safety Plan was developed pursuant to Commissioner’s Regulation 155.17. At the direction of the Board of Education, the Superintendent appointed a District-wide School Safety Team and charged it with the development and maintenance of the School Safety Plan.

The District’s Code of Conduct is also contained in the District-wide Plan.

School Cancellation Procedures/Parent Emergency Notification

The Superintendent has the authority to close school. Information will be provided to parents, guardians or persons in parental relation to the students in the event of a school closing, emergency incident or an early dismissal through the use of local and regional radio and TV stations. In addition, the District will utilize the automated call notification procedure. Click here for more information about parent notifications.

Transportation Safety

The Hudson City School District has an average of 50 buses, transporting 1700 public school students each day. To ensure the safety of students, New York State Law requires that transportation safety drills be held each year.

Playground Safety and Use

Hudson City School District’s playgrounds are designed, installed and maintained in compliance with the standards of the consumer product safety commission safety guidelines. The school district regularly inspects the playgrounds and their equipment to insure student safety, and appropriate staff receive training on playground safety and supervision. The playgrounds of the school are available for use by authorized personnel.

Building Use

School buildings are built with taxpayer dollars. The Hudson City School District believes those buildings belong to the community and should be available for community use when it does not conflict with the District’s mission of educating children.

In order to arrange use of a District facility, the requester must complete a building use request form. This form is available online and can be found here. Once your request has been received by the Facilities Department, you will be notified as to the status of your request.

Science and Technologies Safety

The District issues safety rules and guidance for students in Science and Technology classes. Parents should be aware of the safety instructions their child will receive before engaging in any work or activity. No student will be permitted to perform activities unless the safety contract issued to each student with the safety rules is signed by both the student and parent/guardian and is on file with the teacher. These measures are taken to ensure the safety of children in the school setting.

Hazard Communication

It is the policy of Hudson City School District to purchase and use the least hazardous materials available and feasible for our intended application. Where the use of hazardous materials is necessary, administrative and engineering controls will be implemented to reduce employee exposure. Information and training about hazardous materials will be communicated to employees so they can participate in their own protection. Additionally, employees may use the Chemical Request Form to request information on a particular chemical from the District prior to working with it.

Infection Control/School Health

The school district wants to prevent infection and disease within the school population. Here are some tips to keep your child and family healthy:

  1. Encourage good health, rest, and foods to keep children healthy.
  2. Proper hand-washing is very, very important and needs to be practiced everyday and frequently.
  3. Cover your cough with your cloth covered arm or tissue and keep from spraying your bacteria/viruses to others. Most illness spread by direct or droplet methods.
  4. Keep children home if they have a fever of over 100.0 degrees. They are more susceptible to other illnesses and of course can make other children ill with theirs.
  5. Note web sites related to infection control to further assist you in keeping your family healthy. GREAT WEB SITE TO CHECK OUT A TOUR OF A HOUSE FOR INFECTIOUS GERMS!!!

MRSA – Learn how to control the spread of Methicillin-Resistant-Staphylococcus-Aureus (MRSA) in our schools:

  1. Most important is good hand-washing with soap/h20 or an alcohol based hand sanitizer.
  2. Cover all wounds until healed.
  3. Take care of yourself- eat right, exercise, and get plenty of rest.
  4. Do not share personal items such as towels, razors, etc

All areas scheduled for maintenance and repair or construction by school district personnel as well as areas of flaking and peeling paint shall be tested for the presence of lead and abated or encapsulated in accordance with HUD guidelines. All renovation work performed in child-occupied facilities as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency will be performed in accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency’s lead renovator rules.

The Hudson City School District shall take the responsibility of being aware of the geological potential for high levels of radon and test and mitigate as appropriate. This information is available from the New York State Department of Health Radon Measurement Database.

The school district is responsible for inspecting its buildings, testing and identifying building materials that may contain asbestos, and for developing a plan for the proper management of those materials. The school district must also appoint a trained Asbestos Designee. The District has appointed the Head of Maintenance & Facilities as the LEA Designee for the school buildings. The Designee ensures that inspections are conducted with the required schedule and that asbestos is only disturbed in compliance with New York State Code Rule 56 and the Commissioner of Education’s Regulations.

Pest Management

The Hudson City School District recognizes that pesticide applications have the potential to contaminate the school or work environment and expose staff and students to pesticide residues. The District acknowledges the risks inherent in the use of chemical pesticides in the school environment, and will consider pesticides as a last resort when other methods have proven unsuccessful. The goals of the District are to maintain the integrity of school buildings and grounds, protect the health and safety of students, staff and community members, and preserve our learning environment. To accomplish these goals, the District authorizes the implementation of a comprehensive Integrated Pest Management Program for all school buildings and grounds.

Notification will be accomplished by posting notices in each school building in the main office, nurse’s office, faculty lounge, and at the place of occurrence. In addition, notices will be sent home to parents or other persons who request in writing to be informed in advance of pesticide applications.

A notice will be provided to school staff, students and parents at the beginning of each school year briefly explaining the school district’s pesticide use policy. The notice will indicate that pesticides may be used both indoors and outdoors, as needed. The school will provide, to the extent possible, notification of pending pesticide use to persons requesting such information. Notification requests must be made in writing.

The District will establish and maintain a list of persons requesting written notification 48 hours prior to any pesticide application. The list will be updated upon written request of persons who wish to receive a written notice prior to pesticide application. Water Testing

In accordance with New York State law (S.8158/A.10740), the Hudson City School District routinely tests water in all school buildings for lead contamination and makes the results publicly available. Please visit our Water Testing webpage for more information about recent testing.
