Kim Carnegie, Director of Student Services at Hudson City School District, has retired after a distinguished 15-year career with the district. However, she continues to serve the Hudson community as the Interim Director of Student Services.

Before joining Hudson, Carnegie held various leadership positions in education, including Director of Data at East Greenbush, Elementary Principal and Director of Special Education at Green Island, and Special Education Teacher in another part of the state.

“I was fortunate enough to be a general education student in a first-grade inclusion class and was drawn to working with the students with special needs,” Carnegie said. “I had wanted to be a special education teacher ever since.”

Kim reflected on some of the brightest moments throughout her tenure at Hudson. “There are so many great memories,” she shared. “I could talk about the time I was with our primary communications class and I heard a student with Autism use spontaneous language for the first time. Or about working collaboratively with a parent to come up with a plan to ensure a student met criteria to graduate while hospitalized.”

Kim offered valuable advice for aspiring educators: “Build relationships with students, their families, and your colleagues. These relationships are the foundation for a successful and rewarding career. Embrace continuous learning. The field of education is constantly evolving and it is imperative to engage in professional development to stay current on best practices and refine your teaching skills. Additionally, remember that self-care is essential…You must prioritize your well-being through healthy habits, stress management, and finding joy in the little things that happen every day.”

Besides assisting the school district in the interim, Kim has exciting plans for retirement. She launched her own business and became a certified Holistic Neurogrowth Learning Success Coach, offering coaching services to students and professional development to school districts. Carnegie and her family will soon be relocating to Savannah, Georgia.
