Dear Hudson CSD Families and Staff,

As you are aware, our district uses Google Services via Google Workspace for Education to support both instructional and operational needs. Recently, we received guidance from Google and the New York State Education Department (NYSED) regarding actions school districts must take to comply with state laws protecting student data.  As a result, while many Google services will remain available to students, there are some that they can no longer use going forward.

Google Services Available to Students

We are pleased to share that students may continue using Google Core Services.  These services are designed to foster creation, communication, and collaboration.  Examples of these services include Google Forms, Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Sheets. Please access the “Google Services for Students Resource” to view the list of Core Services that students can use. (Please note, students do not use Google Chat in Hudson.)

Google Services Available to Teachers and Staff
Certain services, called Google Additional Services, will be turned off for students. This will take effect by Monday, February 10th.  For example, students will no longer be able to search for videos on YouTube. However, teachers will retain full access. This means teachers can still use YouTube during whole-class instruction and embed specific videos into Google Classroom, Google Slides, or other approved platforms for individual student viewing.  While teachers and staff will retain access to these services, please be advised that student data cannot be entered into any of the tools that are not available to students. Please access  the Google Additional Services to see the list that students will be officially turned off for students. It is important to note that not all of the services on this list were utilized in the past by students. For Additional Information Updates, twelve Regional Information Centers (BOCES) across the state collaborated on creating this Resource Hub to help answer questions about Google and what students may and may not use. Additionally, Model Schools has also created a resource website for teachers.

To support our district in making these adjustments, we will be offering training sessions for teachers and staff by the Instructional Technology Coaches and the IT Dept as needed.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Manager of Instructional Technology and Data Privacy Officer, Ms. Cheryl Rabinowitz at rabinowitzc@hudsoncsd.org or at 518-828-4360 ext. 2119.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility as we implement these important changes. We appreciate your continued efforts to support our students’ safe and effective use of technology.

Sincerely,

Dr. Juliettee Pennyman -Superintendent

Ms. Cheryl Rabinowitz-Manager of Instructional Technology
