On Tuesday, September 3, 2024, the Hudson City School District held its Superintendents’ Conference Day. The morning started with an opening speech from Dr. Pennyman where she acknowledged and introduced new staff, welcomed everyone back, and presented updates on the strategic plan. Following the Superintendent’s speech, Dr. Pressey, DEI Manager, gave an update on the District’s diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Afterward, Dr. Kortright-Torres, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, talked about teaching and learning initiatives district-wide.

 

The District was honored to host Principal Kafele as the event’s anticipated keynote speaker. Principal Kafele is a distinguished and highly respected urban educator, a master teacher, and a transformational school leader. As a middle and high school principal, Principal Kafele became a transformative school leader which included the turnaround of “The Mighty” Newark Tech, which transformed from a low-performing school with room for improvement to a school that earned national recognition and praise. His achievements include becoming the East Orange School District and Essex County Public Schools Teacher of the Year, a Milken Educator Award winner, a New Jersey State Teacher of the Year finalist, delivering 3,000+ conference and program keynotes, an author of 13+ books and professional articles, and has earned many other prestigious awards and achievements.

 

The day followed with Union and Faculty/Staff meetings.
