Last Tuesday (April 18), a group of Mr. McDarby’s SHS Envirothon students worked with Tamar Adler, director of Friends of Oakdale Lake, and ecologists from Great Ecology, to put about 40 pounds of barley straw into Oakdale Lake.

As the barley biodegrades, a fungus that feeds on the grass releases a chemical that inhibits the growth of filamentous algae. The barley bags, which will cover 0.14 acres of the lake’s surface, will be removed in 3 weeks before the beach opens. We are hoping to see a significant reduction in the amount of algae this summer. #HudsonHasHeart
