Alebrijes (Spanish pronunciation: [aleˈβɾixes]) are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical (fantasy/mythical) creatures. The Alebrije was created by Pedro Linares Lopez of Oaxaca, Mexico in the 1930’s inspired by a dream.
These creatures are presented in the Pixar movie, “Coco”, as spirit animals that help guide people to the afterlife.
