UPDATED May 7, 2021

Dear Hudson Families,

We discovered an oversight on our 2020-21 school calendar and must make an adjustment to the returned emergency closing days that were recently announced.

Unfortunately, there was a miscount of our allotted emergency closing days and instead of five, only two were built into the 2020-21 calendar. This means we must have student attendance on May 12, May 19 and June 1 to meet the 180-day requirement and avoid losing more than $250,000 in Foundation Aid from the state. These dates will be half days of remote student instruction, including June 1st even though it is a Tuesday. Teachers will contact students about the work they’ll be doing on those dates.

The error occurred last spring when we scheduled Wednesday, November 25, Thursday, May 27 and Friday, May 28 as dates when classes would not be in session. We mistakenly double counted the three days and included them in our emergency closing count when they were regular scheduled days off instead. Therefore, we only had one unused snow day to give back instead of four, as previously communicated. We used this day on Wednesday, May 5th as it was too late to change when the oversight was realized.

As noted above, there WILL be school on Wednesday, May 12 & 19 as well as Tuesday, June 1, and they will be half days of remote student instruction. Meals will not be delivered on 5/12 or 5/19. Instead, meals will be distributed as follows:

  • MCSES: Families of elementary students that usually pick up meals on remote Wednesdays will receive extra meals on Tuesday, May 11 & May 18 either at school or at their pick-up location (for fully remote students). Meals can be picked up as usual on June 1st and June 2nd.
  • HJHS/HSHS: Blue students that usually pick up meals on remote days will be given extra meals at school on Tuesday, May 11 & May 18. Meals can be picked up as usual on June 1st and June 2nd.
  • HJHS/HSHS: Gold and fully remote students that usually pick up meals on remote days will be given extra meals at their pick-up location on Tuesday, May 11 & May 18. Meals can be picked up as usual on June 1st and June 2nd.

There are no changes to Thursday, May 27 and Friday, May 28, on which classes will not be in session for the long Memorial Day Weekend (May 27-31, 2021).

We apologize for this oversight and any confusion or inconvenience it may have caused. Please do not hesitate to contact the main office of your child’s school if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Dr. Maria Lagana Suttmeier, Ed.D.

ORIGINAL POST (April 15, 2021)

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I want to make you aware of some changes to the spring calendar as a result of having unused emergency days (or snow days). This year, we allotted five emergency closing days but we used only one (there were a total of three snow days but two were forgiven by the Governor due to states of emergency). Therefore, we have four emergency days remaining that will be returned.

Below are the return dates. There will be no classes on these dates. Schools will be closed on:

  • Wednesday, May 5, 2021
  • Wednesday, May 12, 2021 (Note: Virtual students in Grades 3-8 who signed up to take the NYS Math exams will still take the exams on this date.)
  • Wednesday, May 19, 2021
  • Tuesday, June 1, 2021

Please note that the return dates were originally planned for Fridays, but the decision to switch most of these dates to Wednesdays was made based on the hybrid schedule. Since we have a hybrid Blue/Gold schedule in Grades 6-12, “giving back” three Fridays would adversely affect our Gold students as well as the schedules of our non-instructional staff. By using Wednesdays instead, which are usually remote days for the entire district, neither hybrid group will be unfairly affected.

The revised calendar is available on our website at www.hudsoncsd.org/calendar.

If you have any questions, please contact the main office of your child’s school.

Sincerely,

Dr. Maria Lagana Suttmeier, Ed.D.
