M.C. Smith Elementary School delivered 261 pizzas to PK-5 students to celebrate their hard work and engagement in online learning.
“We had students doing extraordinary work who committed to staying engaged in their learning despite the great challenges,” said Superintendent Suttmeier. “They’re exceptional students that really gave an effort.”
MCSES teachers and administrators used money from their own pockets to purchase the pizzas, along with donations from some community members. On June 8 and 9, the pizzas were delivered to student homes by Superintendent Suttmeier, Mayor Kamal Johnson, and MCSES teachers and principals. The Bluehawk mascot also joined a few deliveries.
“The pizza deliveries brought some much needed acknowledgement and closure to this unprecedented school year for both students and teachers,” said Dr. Suttmeier. “We are extremely proud of what they accomplished this spring.”
Rachel Collins, a parent whose student received a pizza, acknowledged the challenges of at-home learning. “It makes us feel really good to know the school cares about the effort that our children put in, that we put in to try to help our kids be successful in school during this time,” she said.
Special thanks to the MCSES administrative assistants who collaborated on reaching out to families, creating delivery routes, and helping coordinate the deliveries with teachers and staff.
