Odyssey of the Mind students during their compeition performanceWhile the date may seem far off, volunteer recruiting begins now!

Volunteers and judges are needed for the 2019 Region 4 Odyssey of the Mind tournament, which is scheduled for March 21, 2020 at Coxsackie-Athens Central School (snow date March 22nd). You do not need to be a parent/guardian of a participating student to be a volunteer or judge.

Volunteering opportunities to help the day run smoothly include registration, door keepers, merchandise sales and more. Opportunities are available for a few hours, the full day of the tournament and more. No training required.

Judges are needed for each of the “problems” teams will solve that day. Some training is required to be a judge. Judges must attend a free training session on Saturday, January 25, 2020 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Capital Region BOCES (900 Watervliet Shaker Road, Albany, NY 12205), near the airport. If you are a returning judge, the session runs from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

ABOUT ODYSSEY OF THE MIND

Odyssey of the Mind offers creative problem-solving opportunities that develop the great minds of our future.

Teams must offer original and creative solutions to open-ended problems in less than eight minutes. Volunteer judges will score the team for creativity. You can see all six problems teams can choose here.

“Odyssey of the Mind Tournaments would not happen without help from our judges and volunteers. Judges and volunteers have the opportunity to see student creativity and problem solving at its best and participate at a fun and exciting learning event,” said Odyssey Regional Director Kerrie Burch.

Since 2007, more than 25 teams from Columbia, Greene and Rensselaer Counties have advanced to the World Finals. At least one team from Columbia, Greene, or Rensselaer County has advanced to the World Finals every year for the past decade, including 14 in the past five years alone, with one advancing in 2015, three in 2016, one in 2017, five in 2018, and four in 2019.
