Science students took their annual field trip to examine “A Day in the Life of the Hudson River.” Students tested river water to determine its properties (such as salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH), netted fish to identify some local species, and described the physical nature of the river (such as the tide, weather, and currents). The Marine Science and AP Biology classes participated, as well as members of the HHS Envirothon Team.

During this event, many school groups along the Hudson River visit the waterfront to collect scientific data that helps build understanding of the river ecosystem. The students’ data is then shared online and compared with other areas, so they can build a better understanding of how their piece of the river fits into the larger Hudson estuary ecosystem. “A Day in the Life” is sponsored by DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program.
